Decluttering Apps

Everyone knows that when you’re moving it’s a great time to toss things you don’t need and you’ve been collecting for years overboard. At Lincoln Moving & Storage, we’re constantly talking with homeowners and renters who have the best of intentions when it comes to decluttering, so they don’t take extra “stuff” with them to their new home. But we also know that things happen quickly during a move, and sometimes it just gets to be too busy. So, we’ve compiled this list of 5 helpful apps that can be a resource to you as you’re looking to lighten your load:

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Decluttr helps you rid yourself of CDs, DVDs, video games and Blu-Rays, and gives you cash for them. The process is easy: scan the item, get a price, pack it, and ship it to them for free – when they receive it, they deposit the “purchase price” directly into your bank account, and voila, you’ve cleaned up your media collection. Donating to Goodwill is a common practice for people getting ready to move their households, and a great way to reduce some of your work and help others at the same time. Goodwill’s app helps you easily find donation centers in your community and understand what types of items are accepted. In addition, the app’s “donation impact calculator” helps you understand the impact your donations have on the lives of people in your community. Free - Available for iOS / Android

The most obvious – and often most overwhelming – part of decluttering is dealing with your papers. Papers, papers everywhere. Evernote has the ability to scan your paper records into digital format for you to access on any device. Of course, Evernote is also a great tool for keeping notes, calendar reminders (Check out our Moving Calendar [LINK TO OTHER BLOG]), important documents and other items it might be handy to have all in one place. Free - Available for iOS / Android / Windows Phone

When it comes to selling gently-used items, the hassle of posting, finding a buyer, trusting that buyer, negotiating price, and shipping can be a non-starter for many people – especially with a big move coming up! Close5 is a safe and secure selling tool that uses Facebook profiles to connect buyer and seller, so you know who you’re dealing with. Typically, buyers through the app are from within a 5- to 10-mile radius of the seller’s location, so shipping is not an issue. Free to list and free to use, simply snap a photo, accept an offer, and meeting in a public place to transact. Free - Available for iOS / Android

It’s when you move that you find those boxes of old photos that are incredibly important to you, but that you’ve been promising yourself you’ll put into digital form at some point. Heirloom gives you the power to do just that, quickly and easily. Just capture an image of the photo, then the app will automatically find the edges of the photo and produce a high quality scan in less than one second. Once your photos are uploaded, you can organize them and privately share through the app – then you can box up those photos and put them in a safe place for your move. Free - Available for iOS / Android
